It’s one of the most practical ways to reduce liability and protect your customers.
Is allergen training required in my state?
This training is accepted and valuable in all 50 states. A growing number of states, counties, and municipalities require standalone allergen awareness training for food service employees. Several other states address allergen awareness within their general food safety or food manager training requirements. Visit our State Requirements page to check whether your state or local jurisdiction has a specific allergen training mandate. Even where not mandated, this training is strongly recommended to reduce liability and protect your guests.
Is this training required at the county or city level?
In some cases, yes. Certain counties and cities have allergen training requirements that go beyond what the state mandates. Check with your local health department or visit our State Requirements page for details on your jurisdiction.
How long is my certificate valid?
Validity and renewal requirements vary by state and jurisdiction. Where mandated, allergen training is typically required every 1–3 years. Even where no renewal is required, periodic refresher training is recommended as menu items, suppliers, and staff change over time.
Do I receive a certificate?
Yes. Upon completing the course, you will receive a printable Allergen Safety Training certificate issued by Serve It Up Safe. You can download it immediately from your account dashboard and keep it on file for compliance purposes.
How long does the course take?
Typically takes about an hour to complete.

What happens after I purchase the course?
You’ll get immediate access. After completing your registration and payment, you can log in and start the course right away. You’ll also receive an email confirmation with your account details and a link to access your training.
Can I pause the course and come back later?
Yes. Your progress is saved automatically. You can close your browser and pick up exactly where you left off. You have 90 days from the date of purchase to complete the course.
Can I take the course on my phone?
Yes. The course is fully accessible on phones, tablets, and computers. No app download is required – just log in from any browser.
Are the quizzes difficult? What if I don’t pass?
The quizzes throughout the course are designed to reinforce what you’ve learned – they are not proctored exams. All section quizzes have unlimited retakes, so you can retry as many times as needed. The final assessment requires a passing score of 70% and has unlimited retakes, but most learners pass on their first attempt. The course material prepares you thoroughly – these are knowledge checks, not high-stakes exams.
How do I download my certificate?
Once you complete the course and final assessment, your certificate will be available for download directly from your account dashboard. You can access and reprint your certificate at any time. Note: This does not apply to Food Manager Training – that certificate is issued by ServSafe after passing the proctored exam.
