Is this training accepted in my state?
In most cases, yes. This training is accepted in the majority of states across the U.S. The only exceptions are states that have their own state-specific food handler certification program with an approved provider list. If you’re in one of those states, visit our State Requirements page to find the right training for your location – we offer state-specific programs as well. If your state does not have its own program, this training and certificate are valid for you.
How long does the course take?
Typically completed in about 1.5 to 2 hours. Entirely self-paced – start and stop anytime.
Is there a proctored exam?
No. There is no proctored exam. The course includes section quizzes throughout and a final assessment at the end. You need a 70% or better on the final assessment to earn your certificate. The final assessment has limited retakes, but most learners pass on their first attempt – the course material prepares you thoroughly.
How long is my certificate valid?
Validity periods vary by state and jurisdiction. In many states, food handler certificates are valid for 2–3 years. Check with your employer or visit our State Requirements page to confirm the renewal timeline for your location.
What do I receive after completing the course?
You receive a printable Food Handler certificate issued by Serve It Up Safe, which you can download immediately from your account dashboard. Your employer may ask for a copy, so we recommend saving or printing it right away.
Will my employer accept this certificate?
This certificate is commonly accepted by employers in states that do not require a state-specific food handler program. If your employer has specific requirements, check with them or visit our State Requirements page to confirm what your state requires.

The final assessment requires a passing score of 70% and has unlimited retakes, but most learners pass on their first attempt. The course material prepares you thoroughly – these are knowledge checks, not high-stakes exams.
How do I download my certificate?
Once you complete the course and final assessment, your certificate will be available for download directly from your account dashboard. You can access and reprint your certificate at any time. Note: This does not apply to Food Manager Training – that certificate is issued by ServSafe after passing the proctored exam.
